Short answer: monsoon failures come from moisture ingress into panels,
junction boxes and terminations; reduced insulation resistance causing earth leakage trips;
lightning and switching surges that destroy drives, LED drivers and electronics; flooded cable
trenches and pits; and corroded earthing connections. Almost all of it is preventable by a
pre-season programme that costs a fraction of one unplanned shutdown.
The monsoon rarely creates a new defect. It exposes an existing one — a gland that was never
tightened, a gasket that perished two summers ago, an earth pit nobody has measured since
commissioning. That is why the same sites fail in the same places every year.
| Mechanism | What You See | Pre-Season Action |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture and reduced insulation | Earth leakage trips, shocks, motor and cable failures |
IR testing of motors, cables and feeders; sealing; space heaters in panels |
| Lightning and switching surges | Dead drives, failed LED drivers, damaged controllers and electronics |
Check arresters and SPDs; measure earth resistance; verify bonding |
| Flooding and corrosion | Tripped feeders, corroded earth strips, submerged joints |
Trench drainage and pumps; raise junction boxes; inspect earth pits |
Surge protective devices degrade as they absorb surges — that is their job. Many have status
indicators showing they have already failed, sitting in panels where nobody looks. Lightning
arresters on incoming lines and at transformers have a condition too. Verify both before the
season, not after a strike. Equally important: a surge protective device without a
low-impedance earth connection cannot do anything, which is why earth resistance measurement
belongs in the same inspection.
Earth resistance rises through the dry months as soil dries and electrodes corrode; the
first storms then arrive while the system is at its weakest. A pre-monsoon earth resistance
measurement across the installation — recorded, not estimated — and a check of earth strip
joints, bonding of structures and continuity to equipment bodies is one of the highest-value
hours in the annual maintenance calendar.
Some monsoon failures repeat because the installation itself is wrong for the environment:
panels with inadequate ingress protection in outdoor locations, junction boxes mounted at flood
level, trenches without drainage, cable routes passing through water-collecting areas, earthing
designed on assumed soil resistivity, and solar arrays or outdoor lighting with no surge
protection on either side. These are design corrections. Doing them once ends the annual cycle;
doing maintenance harder does not.
VTPL carries out electrical system audits, earthing and lightning protection works, panel
and distribution upgrades, and outdoor installation rectification as part of its EPC scope.
With 33+ years of experience across 1,000+ projects in 19+ states — including oil and gas,
railways, steel, highways and urban infrastructure — our teams work to IS 3043 earthing
practice and CEA safety
regulations inside operating facilities.
Moisture lowers insulation resistance and increases earth leakage, water enters panels and
junction boxes through poor sealing, trenches and pits flood, and lightning activity drives
surges into equipment at a time when earthing is often at its weakest.
Insulation resistance testing, sealing of glands and enclosures, surge protective device and
arrester condition, earth resistance measurement, trench and pit drainage, thermography, and
testing of backup supply and emergency systems.
Through a combination of lightning arresters on incoming lines, surge protective devices at
the distribution level and close to sensitive equipment, proper bonding of all metalwork, and a
measured low-resistance earthing system — the protection is only as good as its earth.
Because moisture reduces insulation resistance across the installation, increasing leakage
current to earth until it exceeds the device’s threshold — often without a single obvious fault
point.
If the same locations fail every year, it is usually design: inadequate enclosure ratings
for the environment, junction boxes below flood level, undrained trenches, or earthing and
surge protection that were never adequate for the site.
